  • Berlin Science Week

    This year again EUSJA is offered a fellowship for 10 selected journalists to attend 2 days during the Berlin Science Week (7 – 8 November) and the Falling Walls Conference (November 9). The programme will start on 7 November at the beginning of the afternoon with a Berlin-Tour that concludes at the ceremony for the Berlin Science Award. On 8 November the journalists will have the possibility to attend Falling Walls Venture/ the Falling Walls Lab or any other public event of the Berlin Science Week and on 9 November the Falling Walls Conference. More details and a list of all events (especially on 7 November) will follow.

    The fellowship would add up to 240 EUR per person which corresponds to three nights at a selected hotel (breakfast included, as well as lunch on 8 and 9 November // reception on the evening of 7 November) – the money will be transferred to participants upon arrival in Berlin.

    We’ll find out if we could get more slots for those who do not need accommodation, then I shall inform you. But for the moment we have 10 slots.   • Bringing Pain Relief…

    We have got 10 invitations for EUSJA members to attend the Congress of the European Pain Federation (EFIC) “Pain in Europe”.

    EUSJA journalists were invited to this important scientific event twice – in 2013 to Florence and in 2015 to Vienna. This year EFIC will hold its Pain in Europe conference titled “Bringing Pain Relief to All Patients” in the Bella Center in Copenhagen, Denmark from September 6 to 9.     Some of the world’s leading pain experts who will be presenting are: Tim Deer (neuromodulation), Stephen Ward (2016 NICE Guideline on evidence based management of low back pain and sciatica), Ruth Defrin (stress and pain), Mary Ann Fitzcharles (medical cannabis), Henrik Kehlet and Dan Carr (Post-op pain), and Serge Perrot (fibromyalgia).   • A Better Future for Europe

    EUSJA has 8 grants for its members to attend European Health Forum Gastein and to meet outstanding scientists and policy makers. It is a wonderful place for journalists who cover medicine and life sciences. This year will be the anniversary: the 20-th EHFG will be organized in Bad Gastein from 4 to 6 October with the main topic “Health in All Politics – a better future for Europe”.   • European Science TV & New Media Festival & Awards 2017/18

    The organizers of the Festival are pleased to announce the Call for TV programmes or New Media productions for the 2017/18 European Science TV and New Media Festival and Awards. The range of categories is similar to that in 2016, expanded to nine Awards set out below. These include all the TV and New Media genres and Science in Society categories from previous years plus two subject based prizes following the success of the Physics Prize over the last two years. The festival and awards will again be in Lisbon, Portugal, but the season has changed to avoid a clash of activities in Lisbon, so will be in March 2018. 
    The deadline for entries in all the nine categories is Friday 30 June 2017.

    List of Categories

    A production can be eligible in more than one category; these may be designated either by the entrant or the organizers. The “genre” categories are:

    The Best European Production involving Science in the following four genres:

    • TV Documentary
    • TV Drama and Docu-drama
    • TV General programmes like magazines or current affairs (an item or a complete programme)
    • Informational or promotional Video and Productions for the Web or Science Centres/Museums

    The three so-called “Science in Society” areas are:

    • The Environment
    • Medical Research
    • Women in Science

    And the two categories focusing on areas of science and technology are:

    • The best production presenting Physics.
    • The best production presenting any branch of Engineering

    There will also be dialogue created on Facebook and Twitter in relation to issues in the films and in the festival discussion. This will be flagged in advance and continue during the festival.

    The Festival and Awards 2017/18 is organized jointly by EuroScience, Apordoc Portugal, and EuroPAWS.

  • Fellowships for European Science Journalists

    The European school on oncology (ESO) is offering two opportunities for journalists who are addressing issues of cancer in their work at the human level.

    1.Calling for the best in cancer journalism: the international Cancer World magazine is looking for outstanding pieces of journalism published in 2015 and 2016 that are changing the way we think about cancer. They may be in print, online, on radio, video or television.

    The closing date for applications is 31st October 2016.

    1. Fellowships for European journalists reporting on cancer: ESO and the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) are offering grants to up to 12 European health journalists to attend the European Cancer Congress (ECCO2017) in Amsterdam 27-30 January 2017. The theme is “From evidence to practice in multidisciplinary cancer care”
      The grant covers travel and accommodation costs and free access to the congress and press office. In addition there will be a daily meeting of the ESO-supported group of journalists providing an opportunity to question specialists in more detail and share experiences.

    The deadline for applications is 11 November 2016.
