About

Join EUSJA vice-president Cinzia Boschiero on a debate on ethics in AI.

It seems that Italy is well positioned internationally in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but there is a gap in understanding and adoption at the level of institutions, multiple practitioners, media managers, and public opinion. Considering that the European AI Act includes mandatory AI literacy for businesses and citizens, the most obvious gaps need to be addressed. Society seems to have superficial knowledge, and only a minority value the adoption of AI on a personal and professional level.

Insufficient attention is paid to implications related to ethics in general and deontology in particular. Hence the need for strategies that go beyond simply providing information and addressing users’ concerns and doubts. There is a need to manage effective use of complex technologies by the media also by using AI itself, which from a topic of discussion should become a tool for correct and effective information with targeted supporting actions. With expert input and discussion, here is an opportunity to explore topics such as Artificial Intelligence and its impact on the code of ethics and ethical aspects in communication: accuracy, source control, fact checking, information in a balanced and contextualized way. Experiences on the use of Artificial Intelligence in newsrooms are presented; how to transform complex concepts into understandable narratives is explained. There is no shortage of reflection on social responsibility: role in shaping public opinion and setting the agenda for debates. Proposals are made for digital literacy and on the role of the media in spreading AI culture.
