Press release on the fake ECSJ 2020 in Trieste

Harbour area in Trieste

The European Union of Science Journalists’ Associations (EUSJA) would like to announce that it is not responsible for the organisation of the fake ECSJ 2020 in Trieste, nor does it endorse it.

EUSJA has organised the “European Conference for Science Journalists” or ECSJ in connection with the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) and the World Science Forum since 2014. The five successful editions of the ECSJ have been organised by us in the spirit of European collaboration with the local member association acting as host, a programme of international speakers, and around 450 participants.

The Italian journalist association SWIM is organising a satellite event in connection with ESOF 2020 in Trieste named “European Conference of Science Journalism” using the acronym ECSJ.

The use of a similar name and the same acronym is unfortunate and misleading. This is disinformation, if the choice of ECSJ is with the deliberate purpose to get sponsors and participants to think that it is the same conference created by EUSJA.

On 14 January 2020, EUSJA kindly asked Fabio Turone (as President of SWIM) to please change the name of his event, as it was misleading. He was informed that EUSJA had been approached by many organisations and individuals who had confused the SWIM event with our conference. Unfortunately, no response was given to EUSJA.

Updates on EUSJA activities can be found on www.eusja.org.

Jens Degett

President of EUSJA
