  • Travel grants for the 8th Heidelberg Laureate Forum

This September 20-25, recipients of the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize are invited to gather in Heidelberg to meet with 200 young researchers from all over the world at the 8th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF). In order to reach a broader, more international audience, the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) provides a limited number of travel grants for journalists to cover the event, creating a space to interact with prominent scientists of mathematics and computer science. Applications for the travel grants are accepted until May 4, 2020.

EUSJA members attended the Forum not once. The HLF is an annual networking event where 200 carefully selected young researchers in mathematics and computer science have the unique chance to meet distinguished scientists in their fields for one week of interdisciplinary academic dialogue. A vibrant atmosphere inspires a blend of acute scientific discussions and informal interactions among the participants, setting the HLF apart from traditional conferences. Lectures, workshops and panel discussions spur scientifically driven debate, which is then balanced by various social events permitting participants to pursue their discourse in an inviting environment.

Particularly relevant for interested journalists is the Hot Topic session, which centers on a theme that is highly consequential, not only for science but for society as a whole. At the 8th HLF, a panel of experts from various specializations will discuss eHealth, plus the inherent advantages and vulnerabilities.

Until May 4, 2020, journalists from all over the world are invited to apply on the online tool, irrespective of their media affiliation (print, TV, online, radio). The applications must include a short CV, three samples of work (indicating respective medium), an overview of publications (indicating respective medium) and planned contributions regarding the HLF.

After carefully evaluating each application, the HLFF offers a limited number of travel grants to enable journalists to report on this compelling networking event. Grants cover travel costs as well as board and accommodation during the stay in Heidelberg from September 19-26, 2020.

Apply for a travel grant here: application.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org

    Application deadline: May 4, 2020

All journalists who wish to cover the 8th HLF, including those who do not apply for a travel grant must register via the online tool linked above.

  • Open Call for Journalists Grant Applications

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences  & the European Union of Science Journalists’ AssociationAnnounce Grant Scheme for Journalists Attending the 9th World Science Forum in Budapest, 20-23 November 2019

    www.worldscienceforum.org

    Background

The 2019 World Science Forum (WSF) will take place between 20-23 November in Budapest under the title “Science, Ethics and Responsibility”. Speakers of the Forum will discuss the most pressing issues of the new technological revolution that have the potential to radically transform human life. With the new wave of transformative technological breakthroughs in biological engineering, digitization, nanotechnology and the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the scope and powers of science have widened and so did the responsibilities of funding, discovering and sharing them.

This year the central theme will be providing an opportunity for the considerations of scientists, policy-makers, society, industry and leading science journalists to be challenged from an ethical standpoint in the plenary sessions and allow for more technical debates over issues of science in thematic sessions. The flow of traditional plenary sessions will be completed by keynote lectures of most eminent scientists focusing on recent and inspiring discoveries and new approaches that will be or are already shaping our future.

The World Science Fora are organised as a joint effort of UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), TWAS – the World Academy of Sciences and the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC), and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) as the host of the 2019 event and the organisation that initiated the WSF series in 2003.

The 2019 conference is an opportunity to celebrate the 1999 UNESCO World Conference on Science, the first gathering of the world’s governments and the international scientific community to prepare a new ‘social contrac

t’ for science for the twenty-first century. With the transformative technological developments of the last 20 years, we believe it is time to reinforce our commitment towards the responsible and ethical use of scientific knowledge and to present the emerging challenges scientists and policy-makers are facing in this new era.

Outstanding scientists and leading policy-makers from all over the world will be joined this year by more science and technology communicators than ever before. The aim of this call is to strengthen science media presence onsite. This includes representatives from Science and Nature amongst others.

Join us between 20-24 November in Budapest or follow the events of WSF online if you would like to be part of the exciting debates of WSF2019.

  • The story of pain in Valencia

The European Pain Federation (EFIC) has offered EUSJA 10 grants to attend its biennial Congress in Valencia in 4-7 September (https://efic-congress.org/). The grants include free registration (no conference fees for our members), 3 night accommodation, 40 euros per diem for meals and free local transportation. Journalists have to take care of their travel to and from Valencia.

As always, the Congress will be bringing together the foremost experts in pain medicine at the largest scientific congress on pain in 2019, exchanging knowledge, ideas and the latest advances in the field. The background to this year’s congress is that, today, one in five Europeans experiences moderate to severe chronic pain, seriously affecting the quality of their social and working lives. Nearly half of them receive inadequate pain management. Although new technologies are transforming patient care, at the same time national healthcare budgets are coming under ever more pressure. ‘Pain In Europe’ plans to tackle some of the key questions about how we understand and manage pain, including:

    • What do the problems of opioid misuse mean for Europe and how do we continue to provide the best quality of care for European patients?
    • What new pain therapies have become available and what hope do they offer patients?
    • What do new developments in e-health, big data, genetics and AI mean for pain care?
    • Will we ever be able to measure pain objectively, rather than it remaining a subjective phenomenon?

Journalists can register online at https://efic-congress.org/ https://efic-congress.org/media-registration/. You may also contact EFIC directly: dln@panda-communications.com

  • Have a look at the world with fresh eyes

EUSJA  has confirmed 10 slots for its members to attend the European Health Gastein Forum, Austria (2-4 October).

This Forum is a wonderful opportunity to meet famous scientists and high level policy makers The agenda this year features digital transformation and its effect on health care, the global climate crisis and its implications for health, air pollution and the rise of non-communicable diseases, Europe’s growing vaccine hesitancy, the debate around medical cannabis, patient blood management, why we need to look at the challenge of obesity with fresh eyes, and whether any reconciliation is possible between the growing influence of economic globalisation and advocacy for public (health) interests. You can find the first programme announcement here https://www.ehfg.org/

The EHFG will cover the conference fees for journalists, accomodation up to 4 nights in a 3*** hotel, meal, transfer to and from Salzburg airport.  Journalsists have to take care of their flights. In addition to having access to all the speakers and participants, jourmnalists would benefit from the press room facilities (printer, catering), a quiet work space, and daily press conferences with key speakers. They would also have access to the conference dinners.

The applications (name, media, association, e-mail, mobile) should be sent via national association to violae@mail.ru  not later 1 September.
